Emily is a passionate and driven attorney who fights to protect the rights of her clients. Since the start of her career, where she represented juveniles at the Council for Children’s Rights, Emily has zealously defended the rights of those who are not always heard. Since then, as an associate attorney at Powers McCartan PLLC, she has maintained the same level of dedication, hard work, and compassion, toward her clients during what is often a difficult time in their lives.
At Powers McCartan PLLC, Emily is eager to assist those facing criminal charges and traffic citations throughout the state of North Carolina. In addition, Emily assists clients who are seeking a hearing or facing a suspension by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regarding a refusal of chemical analysis in a DWI case, an interlock system violation, or license restoration. Emily also handles civil and domestic cases for the firm, including domestic violence and family law. In 2014, Emily was honored as one of Top 100 Trial Attorneys by the National Trial Lawyers. In 2017, Emily was named Top 40 Under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers.
After growing up in Central Florida, Emily attended The Florida State University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Emily received her law degree from The Charlotte School of Law where she graduated cum laude. Emily has been an esteemed member of the North Carolina Bar since 2012.
Although not a native North Carolinian, Emily is proud to now call Charlotte her home for the past 8 years and use her passion for the law to defend the citizens of Charlotte. When not practicing law, Emily enjoys spending time with her family, exploring local restaurants, traveling, and watching the Florida State Seminoles, Carolina Panthers, and Charlotte Knights. Emily also enjoys volunteering at a local domestic violence shelter, as well as volunteering through Hands On Charlotte.
If you or someone you know has been charged with a criminal, traffic, domestic, or driver’s license issue, Ms. Bretz would be happy to assist you.
